YIPES! STRIPES!

Summers almost here and making me think about stripes...cabanas and awnings and beach umbrellas, but other things come to mind as well...

These cabanas are on a beach in Dinard, France.

A painting of the same beach from about 1907 with yellow striped cabanas, by Clarence Alphonse Gagnon (1881-1942), a Canadian artist.

This is a picture from about 1926, showing Gerald and Sara Murphy with friends on La Garoupe Beach, Antibes, and an iconic beach cabana.

From 1905, a photo of Gustav Klimpt with Emilie Floge, the proprieter of a Viennese fashion salon. What a wonderful robe she has on!

This purple and white striped silk robe was worn by the model in a number of Matisse paintings. You can see an example below,in the 1937 painting, "Small Odalisque in a Purple Robe".

We rented a house in Tricase Porto, Puglia, Italy, a few years ago. These striped curtains are on a doorway from the Breakfast Room to the front patio.

This is the NY townhouse where Holly Golightly lives in Breakfast at Tiffany's...with terrific striped awnings!

Striped Circus Tents...

I photographed this flag detail at a July 4th fireworks party.

This was taken when we visited friends in Whitstable, England. All along the beach are brightly painted beach shacks in different colors.

From Dorset, England...

From Mauritania...

This smiling girl is modeling a red and white striped shirt made by Marimekko. The Jokapoika shirt was designed in 1956 by Vuokko Nurmesniemi and has been in production ever since.

One of my favorite stripes, "Gent's Stripe", in coral from John Robishaw, available to the trade at Thomas Lavin in Los Angeles.

From the Elle Decor book, a red and white striped shower curtain from Ralph Lauren. I like the way the stripe is used in a perpendicular direction as a banding at the top.

Mara Lane, photographed by Slim Aarons at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas, 1954.

This striped cover of Domus is from April 1930. It's a beautiful composition. I can imagine it as the design for a storefront. Domus was founded by Gio Ponti in 1928.

A few years ago I received this David Hockney drawing on a gallery invitation from Louver Gallery in Venice, Ca. Ever since I've wanted to find a place for a red and white wide striped sofa!

Photos below of installations by French Artist, Daniel Buren, whose theme in all his work involves stripes.
